Community fans were overjoyed last September when Joel McHale confirmed that the long-awaited movie was finally in the works. The long-running dream of fans’ of the show, ‘six seasons and a movie’, finally turned into reality seven years after Season 6 aired. It had been a long and bumpy ride for fans to see that dream come true, but things are finally in motion. In a recent appearance at late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! the actor confirmed filming will begin later this year in June.

McHale was on the show to promote his upcoming series Animal Control. During the interview, an Albino Burmese Python was brought out as McHale plays a cop turned animal control officer in the series. Kimmel then reminded him that he worked with a monkey in Community and probed him about the upcoming feature. McHale affirmed, “We are, we’re making the Community movie in June, so… Thanks for remembering.” The actor stayed tight-lipped about the feature, but jokingly confirmed, “I can say Ken Jeong’s gonna be in it.”

The series, set at Greendale Community College, followed former lawyer Jeff Winger (McHale) who is forced to attend the school in order to obtain a legitimate degree. There, he forms a Spanish study group with several quirky classmates who quickly become his found family. Over the years, the group has entertained fans with chaotic situations, famous paintball fights, alternate timelines, animated episodes, and meta-commentary.

When the movie was announced Peacock confirmed most of the cast will be coming back including McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Jim Rash, and Jeong, however, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, and Yvette Nicole Brown, were sorely absent from the cast list. Nonetheless, creator Don Harmon did not rule out the possibility of getting the actors in the roster, previously divulging, “I think if there’s names missing from a list, it’s because the names that are on the list, and their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out.”

Currently, there is no release window for the series or even what the plot will be, except that it will eventually debut on Peacock. In the meantime, catch up with the full series now on Netflix, and coming soon to Peacock.

Six seasons and a movie is finally real after NBCUniversal’s Peacock ordered a feature film closure for Community.

It’s a long time coming for the fan-favorite series, which ran for more than 100 episodes between 2009 and 2015.

The streaming service has ordered Community: The Movie from creator Dan Harmon. It will feature original series stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong. The NBCU digital platform won the rights in a competitive situation.

It comes a month after Harmon gave his most concrete answer to the question about when the movie is coming, revealing that it was a “matter of when.” It seems when is now.

Community, which was set in a community college in Colorado, originally launched on NBC, airing alongside series such as The Office, 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation. It ran for five seasons on the linear network before moving to Yahoo! Screen for its final season – one of the first shows to move to a digital platform after a linear launch.

McHale returns as Jeff Winger, Jacobs plays Britta Perry, Pudi is Abed Nadir, Brie as Annie Edison, Rash as Craig Pelton, and Jeong as Ben Chang.

There’s no sign of Chevy Chase, who starred in the first four seasons but left after frequent conflicts with Harmon following a Season 5 cameo, Donald Glover, who starred in the first five seasons, and Yvette Nicole Brown, who also starred in the first five seasons, are also not returning, but that’s not a surprise given their exits.

Harmon and Andrew Guest will write and exec produce while McHale, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster will executive produce the movie, which comes from Sony Pictures Television and Universal Television.

Peacock is also acquiring the full series library on a non-exclusive basis.

“‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from Community’s early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious and cool NBC comedy,” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences.”

“Community was light years ahead of its time when it premiered on NBC in 2009 and we are thrilled to once again visit the brilliant minds of Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest and this impeccable cast. We are grateful to Peacock, our partners at UTV and to all the zealous fans who have cherished this iconic show,” said Jason Clodfelter, Co-President, Sony Pictures Television Studios.

“This franchise is the very definition of community,” added Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television. “We’re excited to bring the band back together and continue the journey of these beloved characters.”

Alison Brie is featured on “The Last Laugh” podcast.

Alison Brie had one of the luckiest big breaks in the history of television. Before the age of 30, she managed to simultaneously co-star on TV’s most celebrated drama (Mad Men) and most obsessed-over comedy (Community). In the seven years since those two shows ended their iconic runs, she has risen to the top of the call sheet in her beloved Netflix series GLOW, and gone toe to toe with both comedy stars like Will Ferrell and acting legends like Meryl Streep on the big screen.

In this week’s episode of The Last Laugh podcast, Brie talks about making the move to indie film screenwriting with Netflix’s Horse Girl and now her Italy-set comedy Spin Me Round. She also addresses whether fans can expect to see Chevy Chase in the eventual Community movie, explains why she felt the need to apologize for her voice work on Bojack Horseman, and a lot more.

On some films, “producer” may be a vanity title added next to an actor’s name during the credits to boost their ego, rather than a hard-earned badge of honor. But more and more actors – like Lili Reinhart and Alison Brie – are working to change that, earning that credit by taking a step behind the camera and having a say in almost every decision on their films – from the art, to the props, to the music and to casting.

During this episode of WrapWomen’s “UnWrapped” Podcast, “Look Both Ways” star and executive producer Lili Reinhart, along with “Spin Me Round” actress, co-writer and producer Alison Brie take us behind the scenes of their recent projects and what they learned in taking on various roles during production.
